Health & Wellness provides a range of services to support your sexual and reproductive health. Learn about our services below!
Birth control
The family doctors at the Health & Wellness Centre can provide counselling on the various forms of birth control, including risks and benefits, and can help you choose and prescribe which method is right for you. You can also get free external and internal condoms from the medical and mental health clinics.
You can learn more about your birth control options from Sexual Health Ontario or Sex & U (PDF).
Long-acting contraception – IUD and implant insertions
Our medical clinic offers hormonal and copper IUD insertions, as well as Nexplanon insertions. These long-acting contraception methods last between three and ten years. You can discuss each of these options with a doctor at Health & Wellness and decide which is right for you.
You can learn more about different types of IUDs at whatsnextforme.ca and Sex & U.
Emergency contraception
Emergency contraception can prevent a pregnancy when used soon after unprotected intercourse, or following failure of a birth control method. Emergency contraceptives do not cause abortion or miscarriage and will not be effective if you are already pregnant. If you know or suspect that you are pregnant, you should not use emergency contraception. You can also use emergency contraception if you have experienced a sexual assault.
There are 2 types of emergency contraception: emergency contraception pills (ECP) and copper IUDs (intrauterine devices). Health & Wellness provides both copper IUD insertions and can prescribe emergency contraception pills. You can purchase some types of ECP, such as Plan B, directly at a pharmacy without a prescription or a consultation with a doctor, while others like Ella do require a prescription.
Learn more about emergency contraception methods at whatsnextforme.ca or Sex & U (PDF).
Pregnancy care and support
Pregnancy is a major life event, and it can be especially challenging to manage while you are pursuing academic goals. Our doctors can provide care for students who think they may be pregnant, and for those who are within the first trimester. They also provide information and resources about pregnancy care.
In the first trimester, your family doctor will refer you to either an obstetrician, midwife or another family doctor to provide prenatal care.
U of T’s Family Care Office can also help with family matters, and the Sexual Education Centre at U of T has pregnancy tests and safer sex supplies available.
STI education and care
Health & Wellness can test, treat and provide education on sexually transmitted infections (STI). This includes prescribing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to help reduce your risk of HIV. Our clinics also have free internal and external condoms available.
STIs are common and anyone engaging in sexual intercourse can be at risk, regardless of sexual orientation or number of sexual partners. An STI can be passed from one person to another during sexual or intimate contact, particularly through unprotected oral, vaginal/frontal or anal sex. Most STIs are treatable and manageable, but some can be life-threatening, if left untreated. Many people with an STI have no symptoms, which is why it is important to get tested if you suspect you may be at risk. Learn how to reduce your risk of STIs.
