The U of T Tutor Training Program or UT3 is a series of modules to teach current undergraduate students at the St. George campus how to be effective tutors. Once students have completed all nine training modules, they will be added to Academic Success’s list of trained tutors, so that other students can find additional support for their learning.
Note: During this pilot year, only undergraduate students are eligible to complete the training. We are creating a specialized training program for graduate students that will be ready in the near future.

How The Program Works
Module completion
After meeting the eligibility requirements above, students can take the modules in any order they choose. Exceptions: U of T Tutor Training 101 and the Introductory Workshop and Skills Assessment serve as prerequisites for the whole program. Assignment and Syllabus Analysis is a prerequisite for Using Questioning to Support Active Learning.
Tutoring work & status
Once students have completed all nine modules listed above, they will be added to our accessible list of tutors as “Trained.”
Tutors will be required to have achieved at least 73% (3.0 GPA) in specific courses or close equivalents to support others in that subject, or to provide acceptable alternative evidence of course- and subject-specific skill.
Trained tutors have 24 months to complete 25 hours of tutoring work. If they are not able to meet this standard, their status with the program will be reviewed.
Once students have tutored for 25 hours, they will be upgraded in our list as “Experienced.” Experienced tutors are expected to lead one Community of Practice every 24 months to maintain their status. This designation and access to the UT3 platform will last as long as they have access to CLNx (i.e., two years after graduation).
Details on the UT3 tutor database will be added in the coming weeks. Please watch this space for further updates.
Community of Practice
The Community of Practice (CoP) will be led by Experienced tutors, although all tutors and trainees engaged with the UT3 will be invited to participate. The format of each CoP session may vary, but in general will take the form of a group discussion on a specific issue or technique, in order to further strengthen this peer-to-peer learning.
