Drop-In Q&A Sessions for International Students
If you’re an international student arriving in Toronto for the beginning of the fall or winter semester, have questions about academic expectations at U of T, or want to learn more about resources available to support you, join us at a drop-in Q&A session! This space is for you.
These are virtual question and answer (Q&A) sessions co-facilitated by friendly advisors from Academic Success and the Centre for International Experience for international students. Advisors are available to answer questions, offer updates, support you in your learning and help you find community.
All questions are welcome in this space, and you can join a session for however long you would like.
Workshop: Overcoming the Messaging that Your English “Isn’t Good Enough”
If you’ve ever felt as if your spoken English was “not good enough” or been reluctant to fully participate in a conversation out of fear of being misunderstood, join us for this workshop to unpack where these messages come from and how we can address them.
In this interactive session, we will discuss our identities and inner thoughts as they relate to communicating in English as an additional language (EAL). The workshop will cover topics such as the legitimacy of global Englishes, accents, and dialects; the benefits of multilingualism in academic learning; and “translanguaging” as a valid practice for integrating your language strengths. We will also address how to challenge some of the external factors and dynamics that can negatively impact your confidence.
We have designed this workshop with the following participants in mind: international students; students who are newcomers to Canada or have a different immigration status; multilingual students; and students who use English as an additional language (EAL). If you identify with these groups, we welcome you to attend!
These workshops usually take place in the fall and winter semesters. Check back soon for dates and times!
International Student Panel
Attend this panel event where international student panelists will share their insights and tips with you about navigating cultural and academic transitions while studying at U of T.
Discussion topics include:
- Transitioning and adapting to a different educational system
- Adjusting to cultural norms and practices in academics
- Managing time for school and co-curricular activities
- Reflecting on language-based challenges and successes
- Making social connections and finding community
- Working in Canada and planning for post-graduation
Following the panel, you will have the chance to join a themed breakout room facilitated by one of the panelists. International student leaders will ask follow-up questions and engage in conversation about shared experiences. This is a great opportunity to meet other students from across the University and expand your network.
This panel will take place in the winter semester. Check back in the fall for the date and time!
