Imani King
Pronouns: she/her
Role on Team: Orientation, Transition and Engagement Intern
Best Thing About This Program: The best thing about this internship is you are given the room to grow and incorporate your interests and ideas into your work. I feel really strongly about improving referral processes, especially for student leaders, so I looked into giving people spaces to return to when they wanted to look back on resources. I also found a lot of learning in opportunities I didn't necessarily expect, such as working with other colleagues in different departments to create, deliver, and facilitate content for incoming students. In that, I was able to bring a different perspective and what I thought was important to a department that I wasn't working out of.
Status: Undergraduate
Program of Study: English major, double minors in Caribbean Studies and Education & Society
Year of Study: Fourth year
Interest(s):

As the Leadership Development Intern, I loved the opportunity to be an integral part of the Student Engagement team, working alongside professional staff whose #1 priority was supporting my learning and development. The experience supported me in building skills in curriculum development and event coordination, while also enhancing my existing skills in administration and facilitation, all of which I was able to do through an extensive EDIA lens. I particularly appreciated the dedicated approach to Professional Development. Every project I took on was intricately tied to my own learning goals while also supporting the team, and we had dedicated conversations with professionals in their fields to facilitate networking and career growth beyond this opportunity. As a mature graduate student, I was a bit nervous about taking on an internship following my studies, but it was the best decision I could’ve made for myself and I am so grateful for the way that this role, and the CALDE team, propelled me into my current career.
Kelly, Leadership Development Intern 2021
From June to October 2021, I had the privilege of working as the Mentorship & Peer Programs intern with Student Engagement. Prior to the internship I held a casual position as a Peer Leadership Facilitator with the Clubs & Leadership team. During my time with the Clubs & Leadership team I had the opportunity to work alongside the Mentorship & Peer Programs team which introduced me to the mentorship realm where I discovered a new-found passion of mine. I found my experience rewarding, as if I was making an impact on the lives of others through facilitating mentoring relationships and creating space for connections to flourish. I decided to act on this enthusiasm I embodied when engaging in mentoring work and applied for the Mentorship & Peer Programs intern position after my work study contract ended. From there, my passion for mentorship amplified. I found that I was able to immerse myself into my work which encouraged me to always show up as my authentic self. My authentic self exudes passion and dedication, and the Mentorship & Peer Programs team offered me space to voice my opinion and generate meaningful change. As an intern I felt valued, appreciated and supported. In addition to me being able to explore my passion, the intern position provided me with various opportunities to make connections through networking with staff and peers on the Student Engagement team, but also with others either in different departments or outside organizations. I was also given ample space to work on personal and professional development. I was encouraged to attend workshops and events that would further my learning especially in areas that interest me such as EDIA. My experience as an intern was invaluable. If you are considering this experience, I would definitely recommend it. The connections and skills gained will prepare you for success in whichever career you choose to pursue.
Morghan, Mentorship & Peer Programs Intern 2021
My time within my internship was the perfect bridging experience between roles I held as a student into my professional career beyond graduation - there was an intentional structure to expose me to professional development events, staff within and outside of the university to broaden my network, and to check-in with my goals throughout the role. I really loved my time with Student Engagement because the staff, both that I worked closely with and those that I only saw at team meetings, were so lively and inclusive and eager to take a sincere interest in the interns & their success - Student Engagement is also a great starting point for a career within the university because it's position within the institution allows for you to meet people from across many units and colleges and/or be involved with programming that can reach students from across campus. I worked on the CCR portfolio through my internship and was the lead on a lot of integral administrative processes for a tri-campus program, while supporting work-study students within the portfolio and working on projects that I was able to start from the ground up based on where my passion where.
