Work Study – How to Apply on CLNx

Applying for Positions

Consider your personal or professional development goals. What knowledge and / or skills do you need to achieve those goals?

Search Work Study job postings: Think beyond the position title! Use keywords from your goals and interests to search for positions that will help you build transferable skills.

e.g., Want to be a lawyer when you graduate? There are many transferable skills required for this role – try these keywords in your search: advising, problem-solving, work under tight-deadlines, research and analysis, and more!

Understand the knowledge and skills required for the position and tailor your resume to demonstrate you have the required knowledge and skills (think about all of your experience: academic work, volunteer, student leadership and employment).

Resume / Cover Letter & Interview support: Each campus’ career services has a suite of resources to support your resume writing and interview skills. Explore the resources available at your campus or at all three:

Review asynchronous resume resources, attend a resume workshop or have your resume reviewed at your campus’ career services.

To find relevant workshops and events, select Events & Workshops from the left-hand menu on the CLNx and select your campus. To sign-up for appointments, select Appointments from the left-hand menu on the CLNx and then select your campus.

Just like your resume, in an interview you will be asked about your knowledge and skills related to the job requirements.

Go to the interview prepared to share a story related to each of the core knowledge or skill requirements identified in the job posting. Practice using the Big Interview tool on CLNx (refer to the CLNx Career Resources page). Or you can attend an interview workshop or practice interview at your campus’ career services. To find relevant workshops and events, select Events & Workshops from the left-hand menu on the CLNx and select your campus. To sign-up for appointments, select Appointments from the left-hand menu on the CLNx and then select your campus. Make sure your UTORid and TCard are activated, as this will be a requirement of being employed in the Work Study program!

After Applying

  • Congratulations on being hired! Please follow the next steps for onboarding.
  • If you have not heard back from the hiring department by the end of the hiring period, it is very likely they have moved forward with another student. It is natural to feel disappointment with this outcome.
  • If you are unsuccessful with receiving an interview or a job offer, use this time to strengthen your application. Consider attending workshops or booking an appointment with the career services on your campus.
