There may be a variety of financial aid (grants and bursaries) available for students with disabilities from both government and University sources. Speak with your accessibility advisor about possible disability-related financial assistance.
Apply for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (or the equivalent program in your home province) to determine whether you are eligible for any of the following:
- Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD)
- Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities
- Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment – Students with Disabilities
- The ability to take a reduced course load (as low as 40% or 2 courses) and still receive financial support if you have a permanent disability.
Please note: We cannot provide reimbursements for psycho-educational or other assessments and equipment that have not been approved in advance through our office. You must meet with your accessibility advisor to discuss disability-related financial assistance.
Returning students: Contact Accessibility Services Reception to schedule an appointment with your Accessibility Advisor to discuss disability-related financial assistance.
University Assistance with Costs Related to Documentation
Please refer to Financial support for students with disabilities to learn more about financial aid (grants and bursaries) available for students with disabilities. Refer to U of T Certificate of Disability for more specific information about disability-related financial assistance for costs related to medical documentation.
U of T Certificate of Disability
When a health-care provider charges a fee to complete the U of T Certificate of Disability (PDF), students encountering a financial barrier to obtaining required documentation may be eligible for reimbursement upon request, up to a maximum of $250, to help offset this cost.
If you suspect you have a disability and do not yet have a formal determination of a disability, we encourage you to follow up with your regulated healthcare practitioner to obtain a medical screening for completion of the Certificate of Disability. This may require you to attend more than one appointment with your healthcare practitioner to complete some screening questionnaires and identify current functional limitations. It is important to note that we are not asking your healthcare practitioner to refer you for an assessment, or for you to obtain an assessment independently. Accessibility Services is not responsible for fees a student incurs for unauthorized assessment(s).
If you are encountering a financial barrier and other funding sources are unavailable, please request support at the time of registration by contacting Accessibility Services via the portal.
Expenses that are not eligible for coverage
Please note that neither Accessibility Services/University of Toronto or the Bursary for Students with Disabilities covers costs students may be charged by health care providers or 3rd party providers related to no shows, late fees or cancellations.
