In The Field offers an opportunity to learn about different careers in an industry by visiting an organization’s workplace. Join us for a small group visit to an organization where you will:
- Explore a range of potential careers within an industry by hearing the career stories of employees.
- Build your network by connecting with professionals from a range of departments and roles.
- See what a typical workday looks like, understand workplace cultures and get a sense of the work and priorities of the organization via a workplace tour.
It is a valuable opportunity to get to see the inside of a company, meet its people and learn about their unique career stories.
All In the Field sessions are open to:
- Students from all disciplines
- Graduate students, including Masters and PhDs
- Recent alumni (up to 2 years post-convocation date)
Registration is first-come, first-served. Registrants have the option of joining a waitlist and may gain a registration spot due to cancellations.
In the Field visits take place throughout the year.
- Expect each session to include a tour of the host organization’s workplace, opportunities to learn and connect with a diversity of staff members representing diverse career fields and open networking time with company staff.
- U of T Career Exploration staff will be present to support our participants at each session and will facilitate important career learning reflection sessions.
- Each session will be a half-day experience (between 3 to 4 hours in length) and we will visit organization within the downtown Toronto core. All locations will be accessible via TTC.
- Depending on the host organization, you may also be invited to optional social or professional experiences. This could include things like company social mixers, board meetings, or product demos. Review the event description of each session on CLNx to learn more.
To prepare you for each session Career Exploration staff will send email reminders, session agendas, and any other information related to the host organization.

Host Benefits
In the Field visits are an opportunity to meet talented, diverse students and recent graduates who are actively engaged in their career exploration journeys.
While an In the Field session is first and foremost an experiential learning opportunity for our participants, we do hold space for our organization hosts to share information about relevant internships, co-op positions and early career job opportunities.
Host Logistics and Commitment
- In the Field visits last between three to four hours in your workplace.
- We require hosts to have the appropriate space and resources to accommodate between 25 to 35 students.
- In the Field sessions are always accompanied and supported by U of T Career Exploration staff, but will require collaborative planning and event facilitation contributions from the host organization, as well.
We take into consideration the following:
- The workplace proximity and accessibility for University of Toronto students at St George campus.
- The diversity of career opportunities which can be profiled at each organization.
- The organizations attention and commitment to EDIA and workplace wellness initiatives.
