Spouses/partners of students and work permits
Spouses/partners of international students are eligible to apply for an open work permit if they wish to stay in Canada long-term with their spouse (i.e. you, the international student). Spouses/partners can apply for a work permit before or after they arrive in Canada. The work permit will usually be issued for the same length of time as the student’s study permit. Spouses/partners do not need a job offer to apply for a work permit. Most spouse/partners come to Canada as visitors first and apply for a work permit after they are in Canada. The Immigration Canada webpage provides information about how to obtain an open work permit for your spouse from inside of Canada.
