My First Six Weeks is your six-week “How-To U of T” guidebook to prepare you for adapting to your new life as a U of T student. 

My First Six Weeks features six weekly workshops, facilitated by staff and upper-year students: these workshops will allow you to develop your academic skills, learn more about campus resources, explore new opportunities and gain insights on taking care of yourself. 

At the end of these six workshops you will know where the best food is, where the quietest library is, what kind of student clubs are here and how to write a university essay. Additionally, you will have a mentor to help you find many new friends.

Overview

My First Six Weeks runs from September 5 to October 12 and consists of six workshops, each with a different theme. Each workshop runs three times a week at the same time each week - this way you can pick the time that works best for you and connect with the same mentor and the same group of people for the duration of the program. The weekly time slots are as follows:

  • Tuesdays, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursdays, 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  • Fridays, 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The only week that is a bit different is Week 1. The Week 1 welcome launch will take place during Orientation, on Wednesday, September 5, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. If you cannot attend the Week 1 welcome launch, you are welcome to start when the weekly workshops begin in Week 2.

If you attend at least five weekly workshops, your participation in My First Six Weeks will be recorded on your Co-Curricular Record.

In addition to the weekly workshops, My First Six Weeks will keep you connected through weekly outings so that you can spend some social time with your mentor and new friends throughout the program.

Eligibility

My First Six Weeks is open to all new undergraduate students on the St. George campus. Please be sure to check your class schedule before registering for My First Six Weeks. Once you register for a specific time slot, you will be expected to attend a workshop every week at the time you have selected.

Week 1: How-To… Make U of T Your New Home

Join us during Orientation at the Week 1 welcome launch to learn more about what makes U of T so unique and the opportunities that await you here. You will also be introduced to the workshops you will be participating in, the mentor who will be there to guide you, and some of the new friends that you’ll be seeing each week.

(NOTE: If you cannot attend the Week 1 welcome launch, you are welcome to start when the weekly workshops begin in Week 2.)

 

Week 2: How-To... Achieve Academic Success

Start your first full week of classes off strong by getting some helpful tips on reading syllabi and textbooks, navigating the libraries (some of them are huge!), academic integrity, studying effectively, and how to not fall asleep in lecture.

 

Week 3: How-To… Make This Your Community

U of T is part of your new community, so might be Toronto and the surrounding area. Join us to discover some of the ways that you can get involved on and off campus and get some of your biggest questions about involvement opportunities answered.

 

Week 4: How-To… Stay Above Water

University can be tough sometimes and there will be times when you feel a bit stressed. This week’s fun, interactive workshop explores the five ways to well-being: taking notice, being active, learning, connecting, and giving back.

 

Week 5: How-To… Set Goals

Congratulations, you’ve already made it through the first month of your first year! Now that you’re starting to get into the rhythm, it’s time to look forward and start making strong, realistic goals for what you want to accomplish this term, this year, and beyond.

 

Week 6: How-To… Score Goals

In our final week together, we will be discussing how to prepare for midterms and finals, and how to achieve those goals that you have set for yourself. We will also be reflecting on our six weeks together and celebrating you for having aced “How-To U of T”!

The Blueprint Program

If none of the time slots for My Six First Weeks work for you, or you are seeking a less-structured transition program that you can complete at your own pace, then you may be interested in the Blueprint program.

Blueprint provides you with a weekly email, from which you choose the eight workshops and the involvement activity that fit your interests and your schedule. Blueprint is a great way to start exploring your campus, realizing new passions, and discovering exciting ways to get involved in your community at U of T.
