Ulead Mentorship Program

The Ulead Mentorship Program was piloted from September 2012 to April 2013 to capture the informal mentorship occurring in campus organizations at the University of Toronto in a semi-formal, semi-structured way. The program will aim to run again given a number of experienced student leaders submit their application by December 2013.

This program hopes to give experienced student leaders (i.e. Ulead Mentors) of campus organizations to develop their mentoring (or coaching) skills as a form of leadership with less experienced student leaders (i.e. Ulead Mentees) within their respective campus groups. Ulead Mentees will gain a stronger connection with their own leadership development being mentored and, therefore, a greater ability to develop their own organizations.

Here is a list of questions that describes the roles, expectations and incentives of the program for student leaders who may wish to participate in the Ulead Mentorship program.

Ulead Mentors

Who would be a Ulead mentor?

A mentor would be any student leader (preferably elected or appointed) in a campus group at the university that identifies as being experienced student leader on campus. Experienced may mean having held an executive position for more than 1 year or an active member of a group for more than 2 years. They would also have the desire to mentor someone in their own group to potentially run for a leadership position in their group and have identified members in mind. Mentors would have demonstrated experience collaborating with other student group/leaders on campus.

Note: It is also okay if the Ulead Mentor be a former student (i.e. an alumni) of the group or the university.

What would be a selection process for mentors?

The selection process for mentors in the program would be the following:

  1. The group would have 2 years of consecutive recognition on campus.
  2. The mentor would have completed 1 year of a leadership role in the group.
  3. The mentor may have graduated from the university, but is only eligible to be a mentor if graduation occurred with 1-2 years – subject to review by the coordinator.
  4. The mentor identifies themselves as an experience student leader on campus. And, the mentor to be paired up with a mentee not from their own organization. This matching is subject to review/interview with the coordinator.
  5. The mentor is able to identify at least one mentee that they see to be potential leaders within their student organization with specific learning goals.
  6. Have demonstrated a capacity to collaborate with student leaders from different campus groups.

What is the incentive for the mentor?

Mentors may receive the following incentives:
  • Satisfaction from sharing their leadership experiences (knowledge, skills, learning) to potential student leaders within their own (or other) organization.
  • A small monetary gift for their participation as mentors for the year.
  • Development of their own interpersonal, coaching or mentorship skills.

What would the mentor be expected to do?

Mentors will be expected to:

  • Attend central training and additional training on mentorship.
  • Attend and participate fully in the 3 networking/social/mixers events
  • Be responsible for submitting the 2 monthly (a total of 10 for the year) reports of their 30 minute interaction with their mentees online.
  • Mentor mentees in accomplishing their learning goals set out at the beginning of the year.

Ulead Mentees

Who would be a mentee?

A mentee would be a member of the group that (1) identifies as inexperienced but desires to seek more leadership opportunities and (2) is also identified by the mentor to show potential in assuming a leadership potential within the group. Guidelines around matching will be established. However, loosely speaking, the mentors and mentees would have to acknowledge the boundaries of friendship, contributing to the group and to respective the mentorship process.

What is the incentive for the mentee?

Mentees may receive the following incentives:
  • Learn in a peer capacity from experienced student leaders about their experience and knowledge to potentially lead their (or another) organization in future.
  • Receive mentorship support throughout the academic year on a variety of issues within the mentorship process/guidelines.
  • Develop their own personal skills and accomplish desired identified goals.
  • The total amount of hours expected is 17 to 20 hours for all sessions over the year.
  • Upon successful completion, the student organization would receive 3 Ulead points.

What would a mentee be expected to do?

Mentees will be expected to:
  • Attend a central information session (or socials and sessions as required)
  • Attend and participate fully in the 3 networking/social/mixers events
  • Be responsible for submitting the 2 monthly (a total of 10 for the year) reports of their 30 minute interaction with their mentors online.
  • The total amount of hours expected is about 20 hours for all sessions over the year.

Ulead Application Process

How do mentors or mentees apply?

Mentors apply online through the link below. Mentors will nominate mentees within a campus group who they sense have "leadership potential" and can foresee mentoring them  for a year. Mentors will be required to nominate at least one student leader that they can foresee helping them develop their leadership skills.

Mentees will be notified of their nomination to the program and will then be asked to submit their own subsequent application. Mentees will need to identify what is some learning or goals they would like to develop in their development as student leaders with respect to their campus group.

What is the Ulead Mentorship Interview?

The Ulead Mentor and Mentees will be interviewed to clarify their desired outcomes from the program, ensure successful matching is made and to provide expectations of the program.
